Job Q&A
by Michele Marrinan

Cassandra Imfeld handles all public relations for Hecklers Entertainment, Inc., a company that creates content for its network of award-winning interactive entertainment Web sites. Imfeld, 26, spends her days at the Birmingham, Alabama, company, pitching Hecklers Entertainment and its three founders to local and national media, organizing events, monitoring the press, keeping tabs on the Internet and entertainment industries, and maintaining relationships with 40-plus gaming companies.

Monster.com: How did you develop online expertise to supplement your PR skills?

Cassandra Imfeld: I've always been a computer geek. I used to surf the Net during grad school for research and became very comfortable using online resources. I also took a few HTML classes after I got out of school. It helped me understand what is and is not possible in terms of Web content.

Mc: How did you get your job at Hecklers?

CI: By chance. I had a friend back at school email me one day saying he heard of this great opportunity. I wasn't really looking at the time, but I couldn't pass it up. Hecklers combines my love for PR and the Internet.

Mc: What's on your to-do list most days?

CI: Everything and anything. At a startup company, you wear many hats. Depending on the day, I can be anyone from the biz dev person to marketing manager to the public relations manager. Technically, I am responsible for all internal and external communications, and I make sure the employees are happy.

Mc: How do you convey the excitement of the Hecklers site when promoting the company?

CI: The story sells itself. The three founders are unique -- they've been friends since high school and are from a very rural town. The fact that they've built this global company is amazing in itself. Also, I'm a high-energy person and that comes across when I pitch stories and talk to the media by the words I use.

Mc: How has your work changed in the dotcom world?

CI: Since I started here, I've been more in tune to the financial repercussions of the industry and more concerned with our overall image and how that can affect the company -- especially when the economy does not look favorably upon Web-based content companies.

Mc: What prepared you for this job?

CI: Working in a fast food restaurant when I was 14. You have to have a lot of patience and be able to move quickly when you're working with the Internet, because it changes so fast. Sometimes a project you've been working on for weeks has to be changed because of the Internet's environment or new technology. But seriously, after graduating with a bachelor's in journalism, I went to grad school for my master's. That gave me a great perspective of both sides of the business. Also, I have a "jump in and let's see what we can do" philosophy.

Mc: Where were you before Hecklers?

CI: I worked at Southern Progress's public relations department. Southern Progress is home to Southern Living, Cooking Light, Southern Accents, Coastal Living, Progressive Farmer and Hot Dots magazines. As I mentioned before, I have a master's in advertising and PR, and I've held several editor-type positions.

Mc: What is a typical day at Hecklers like?

CI: Insane but fun. I never know what's going to happen or what the three founders are going to want to do next. I have to be prepared for anything and everything.

Mc: What do you like least about working for a dotcom?

CI: The instability of Web companies, especially with the economic environment we're in right now. It's a bit scary.

Mc: What have you learned at Hecklers?

CI: There are only four women in our office, and working with mostly guys can be tough. So, I've learned to roll with the rest of them and dish it back.

Remember, we're Hecklers, so you can't have thin skin here.

Mc: What's in your future?

CI: Eventually, I'd like to take the skills and experiences I've acquired and applythem to the college classroom. I'd like to help prepare students for the real world and share with them experiences that go beyond the book -- because as most of us know - it's not as easy as the books make it sound.
